Adelaide Cromwell lecture: Unveiled Voices, Unvarnished Memories: The Cromwell Family in Slavery and Segregation 1692 – 1972

3 PM, MV Museum

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host a very special afternoon honoring those Vineyarders who fought on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement.

As part of this celebration, the Museum presents author Adelaide Cromwell discussing her new book Unveiled Voices, Unvarnished Memories: The Cromwell Family in Slavery and Segregation 1692 – 1972. Her book documents the incredible journey of eight generations of her family from the slave markets in Annapolis to the halls of influence in education, law and publishing. Ms. Cromwell’s grandfather, John W. Cromwell, began the family archives from which the book is drawn – letters and documents that provide an unprecedented view of how one black family thought, strived and survived in American society from the seventeenth century until the twentieth.  Ms. Cromwell’s books will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served.

On exhibit in the Council Room Gallery is “The Civil Rights Movement on Martha’s Vineyard: A Public History Mobile Museum.”  Funded by the Mass Foundation for the Humanities this photographic exhibit is on loan to the Museum from the African American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard.  Board members of the Heritage Trail will be on hand to answer questions about the exhibit.

Guests will be able to enjoy the 2007 Annual Heritage Trail Project by Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School sophomores in the Kids’ Space Gallery

The third attraction for the afternoon is an oral history exhibit of “African Americans and Civil Rights Voices,” mounted in the Oral History Gallery, featuring excerpts from interviews with prominent island civil rights leaders.

$12 non-members/$10 members.  For further information, please call (508) 627-4441 x117

New England Stone Walls

10 AM – Noon

From rugged coastlines, granite ledges, and lichen-covered glacial boulders to the signature stone walls that ribbon our forests and fields, the New England landscape is defined by stone. Martha’s Vineyard is no exception, with our geology defining the presence of stone walls in our landscape, and reflecting the history of the island and its people. Join Robert Thorson, Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, for a closer look at the cultural and environmental history of stone walls. After an illustrated talk he will lead the group on a tour to explore the many stone walls on Arboretum grounds and the adjoining property of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Thorson’s book "Stone by Stone: The Magnificent History in New England's Stone Walls" will be available.  Co-sponsored by the Polly Hill Arboretum.  $24 non-members $20 for PHA and MVM members.
