The MV Museum is purchasing an 19th century barn to be part of the new campus in West Tisbury. The Hazen-Davis barn is a large dairy barn in Shirley, Massachusetts, probably built before the Civil War. It was once the working center of a large farm.

The barn offers an opportunity to relate the new museum’s architecture to the past – in keeping with telling the stories of the Island’s agrarian traditions.

In order to bring the barn to Martha’s Vineyard, we have begun a campaign to raise $400,000, to cover the costs of dismantling and moving of the barn and the eventual rebuilding of the structure to store and present some of the Museum’s collection.

To date we have financial commitments of $90,000 and in-kind contributions from many island community businesses to help with moving, excavation and surveying.

The Barn Campaign illustrates the Museum’s commitment to building a community museum.  Throughout this process we will engage the expertise of island builders, planners, educators and leaders to ensure that we build a museum fitting for the island. The barn structure will be incorporated in the Museum’s overall plans for our 10-acre museum campus in West Tisbury in between the Ag Hall and the Polly Hill Arboretum.

Our first step is to conduct an archeological survey of the property in West Tisbury.  This survey ensures that we preserve any artifacts or ancient ruins that may be as yet undiscovered.  This archeological survey also provides an opportunity to bring the community in to learn about archeological preservation and connections to the Island’s past.

Timbers for the barn are being sold at $1,000 each.  Please call 508-627-4441 ext 121 or email for further information.
